Maj. Chris Backus checks a patient at the flight medicine clinic on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson
Maj. Chris Backus, a pilot-physician, checks a patient at the flight medicine clinic on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, March 9, 2016. Pilot-physicians are involved in the research, development, testing, and evaluation of new and current Air Force systems and missions. Because of unique medical and human factors qualifications, pilot-physicians are particularly well suited to help develop new aircraft, life support equipment, and avionics or software upgrades. This is accomplished to enable aircrews to better adapt to the change in mission requirements. Backus is currently assigned to the 673rd Medical Group. (U.S. Air Force photo/Master Sgt.
